Children are our future. Every day in YMCA Early Discoveries, we help four-year-olds discover their talents and get ready for kindergarten through our collaborative program with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. YMCA Early Discoveries is offered at no cost to participants.

Funded by the Virginia Preschool Initiative Act, we serve children who have been exposed to high-risk factors and situations that might have an adverse impact on their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Our goals are to help each child:

  • To experience intellectual growth and educational stimulation
  • To become emotionally secure
  • To become socially well adjusted
  • To acquire physical well-being
  • To develop and express individuality through creativity

Our hands-on curriculum is implemented through the use of interest centers such as:

  • Blocks
  • Dramatic play
  • Manipulatives
  • Art
  • Sand & water
  • Language & listening
  • Music
  • Cooking
  • Computers
  • Outside play

The Y stays involved with your family, even while at home. Parent communication includes home visits, oral and written communication, progress reports and parent-teacher conferences.
